11/9/10 Avatar

  1. In sentence form, state the primary character in the story and give a description of each.
  2. What is the primary conflict?
  3. What complications do the main characters face in reaching his/her goals? Explain
  4. What is the Theme?

The first primary character is Jake Sully, a human who used to be a marine. He lost the ability to use his legs. He gets around in a wheelchair, and doesn't let anything stop him, if he can help it. He's a good guy at heart, and he really wants to help the Na'vi people drive the RDA Corporation out of Pandora.

The second primary character is Neytiri, a female Na'vi. She's the daughter of the chief of the Omaticaya tribe. She is the first Na'vi to find Jake and is the one who teaches him how to be one of the People. She and Jake are mated.

The primary conflict is manVSman. Jake has to stop the colonel from destroying the Na'vi people and drive the RDA corporation out of Pandora.

Jake can only use his Avatar form while in a the machine, so if someone pushes the eject button he is forced back to his human body. This complicates things when he's fighting alongside the Na'vi and when he's fighting of the Colonel. He can't breathe Pandora's air. It's toxic to humans.

The theme is knowing what is right and doing it.

11/9/10 book review: chapter one

Hattie wakes up on the first day of her summer vacation and  starts her day, going downstairs. She gets out everything her cook will need to start breakfast. After the cook arrives, her mom and dad come downstairs. Hattie brings Miss Hagerty's tray to her and talks with her for a while. After breakfast she goes and watches her dad work, interested in an abstract he's doing. Her dad is a painter. After all of this, she goes to see her best friend Betsy.

11/9/10 book review: before chapter one

The chapter starts off by talking about a person's memories. The person is looking at movies their father made. The person is the only one downstairs, and it is night time. Their parents have gone with her Nana and Papa to a dinner at a club and her father trusted her with his projector and film so she could watch movies. She sets up the projector and watches a movie, and then another, the second one from her precious summer. As she watches it she realizes that her father, though his movies are great,  don't show the whole story. he only showed the good times, not the part that changed the person's life.

11/2/10 respect

  • Define:
  • What respect means to you.
  • 3 examples of respect
  • 5 examples of respect in the workplace

Definition: To show regard or consideration for: to respect someone's rights, to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with, to relate or have reference to.

Respect is tolerating another person differences, beliefs, customs, and or views.
Respect is important to me. Without respect there would a lot more violence in the world and less tolerance for people who are considered 'different'. In a world without respect, people would be a lot less happy because there would be more teasing in schools, more harassment in workplaces and less  order on the streets. Respect is needed to create healthy relationships in normal circumstances and to make and keep friends. If you disrespect someone, chances are they won't like you as much.

  1.  Not teasing people who are homosexual.
  2. Opening the door for an elderly person.
  3. Visiting a relitive's grave or going to their funeral, even if you don't like them very much.

  1. Not being to close to other employees.
  2. Keeping distasteful comments about a customer's choice in purchases.
  3. Saying nothing even if you think a customer looks funny or strange.
  4. Keeping any rumors you hear to yourself, except to warn the person about whom the rumors are about.
  5. Being late for a meeting.

10/14/10 castaway 4

 1. POV (point of view) How was the point of view told.
 2. Discuss basic human survival skills. How did there help keep Chuck alive?

The POV was in Chuck's POV. The movie showed everything that Chuck went through while trapped on the remote island.  It's showed how he survived and how he struggled to keep alive and sane. It told how he finally left the island and how he made it home.

Basic human survival skills include ways to live. Such things such as gathering food, getting water, creating shelter. Avoiding danger, creating tools to aid your survival and being around other beings are also something that you need to have to survive

10/13/10 castaway 3

1. Describe the setting of Castaway.
2.What was Chuck's major conflict?
3.Describe why Chuck let the love of his life go.

The setting of castaway is on an island in the pacific. There are no other islands around, all Chuck, the main character, can see around is water, water, and more water. There is a long stretch of sand where Chuck first ends up, and there is a tall mountain, where chuck climbs up to see if there's anything around. The island was also deserted, there were not even animals on the island besides the fish around it. That being said, chuck was completely alone on this island.

Chuck had two major conflicts. The first one was he had to learn to fend for himself on this island. At first it was extremely hard for him, as he continued to get injured, frustrated, and discouraged. It took a lot of time and effort for him to learn how to catch fish and crabs, to make a fire, and to get fresh water. He had to make tools to help him on the island, such as his 'hatchet' made out of stone that he accidentally made in the beginning.
His other conflict was being alone. Humans, by nature, are social creatures, and need other human beings to keep sane. As a result of being alone, he has to talk to himself, and later, a volleyball with blood on it to create a face. He names this ball 'Wilson'. Talking to Wilson, Chuck keeps relatively sane.

10/11/10 Castaway preview 1

1. What does it mean to be castaway
2.How would you stay alive and sane if you were lost and all alone on an island.

Castaway means to be lost on a deserted island or all alone away from civilization.

The problem is, I wouldn't be able to. At this point of my life, talking with my boyfriend and by best friend are all that keep me sane.

10/6/10 island bliss

If you were stranded on an island by yourself what 5 things must you have and why?

The items would be:

A survival knife. This knife includes wire to cute branches with rings to help you hold it, a compass, the knife, a place to store matches, and some flint. This would probably be one of the things I would need most.

A tent: This would provide my shelter until I could build a better one. I could create a platform with vines and wood in a tree and secure the tent in a tree to protect myself from predators.

A canteen/barrel. I could always make a place to store rainwater by using leaves and a hole, but without a place to store it I would run out. Or I could set out the barrel and catche the water directly, using leaves to keep insect life out of it.

Stationary: At least five notebooks, a set of pens and a set of pencils. This would allow me to record anything I disover, a log of my time there, sketches and rubbings, and other things I may need.

A cellphone with unlimited minutes: I wouldn't last a week without someone to talk to.

9/27/10 a favorite childhood memory

I don't remember how old I was when I met the boy who is now my boyfriend. I think I was about 13, maybe 14. We were on a site called Gaia online, and we were in a roleplay together. I think he messaged me and we began talking. We started becoming close, and I introduced him to my other friend, Kyo. The three of us were even closer  then we had been before. Vyncent and I are now together, and Kyo... well, I still talk to him every now and then...

9/9/10 Iraq struggles

"Explain some of the struggles that the US soldiers have had to go through while in Iraq .
What are many of the injuries that our troops have gone through do to the road side bombs.
What are your feelings about what our troops have had to go through."

The US troops have gone through a lot of hell. Being fired at, the intense heat, even watching their comrades die. I don't think it's right that they should have to die for this. However, it is a noble thing that they are doing, protecting other people from oppression. I am proud of the troops, and I am glad that they are around to help us.

9/8/10 Iraq war feelings

"What do you think the Iraqi  people felt about the Americans? How do they feel about us now?
Do you feel this war was a success or not and what do you think will happen over the next 10 years in Iraq ?"

The people of Iraq were led to believe that all Americans were bad people. They were told this by the terrorists that were responsible for 9/11. I believe now that our troops have been in Iraq, fighting for the Iraqi people's freedom, they may now see us as good people, ones who believe in freedom for all. Freedom to choose our fate, to be free of tyranny, of oppression and most of all, of fear.

I do not know whether the war in Iraq was a success or not, but I believe that we have shown ourselves to be good people. It is my hope that now, with the help of the people of Iraq, we can start creating peace between our countries.   I also hope, that over the next ten years, America and Iraq become allies in the war against terrorism.

9/7/10 Healthcare in the USA

"Health care in the USA is____

  It should___"

Health care in the USA is moderate compared to other countries. It has it's problems, but it has it's advantages as well. If you are under 18, as I am, you automatically have health care. I don't really know much about health care actually...

It should be better, according to lots of people. Some people are content with the health care they have, but other people want universal health care.

9/2/10 Dream job...again?

"Write a paragraph of what career you would like to work at when you graduate high school. Explain why you would like to work in this field."

Even though I don't see why we have to do this again, I'm ok with it, I guess.

At the moment, I have two careers I would like to work at, though only one is probable. The improbable one is to be an ACO, or animal control officer. I love working with animals, and I'd love it even more if I could save them from humans that would harm or mistreat them, however, my anger issues wouldn't  allow me to do so. I would get so upset at the criminal that I might lose my cool and hurt them myself.

That said, I go on to my next career of choice: Computer tech. That's working on computers; fixing them, inspecting them, troubleshooting and such like that. It seems like a good choice for me, since I'm already skilled with computers anyway, and I learn about them quickly. I'd also like to try my hand at computer programming, but not really as a job.

8/30/10 mood and tone

"Describe Mood and Tone in literature and film and give an example."

Mood is the feeling of a specific scene, such as when the mood is happy, good things are going on, such as children playing, or people smiling. In the book series, 'Guardians of Ga'hoole' a happy mood is when the owls are all in the dining hollow, talking and laughing, eating together happily, and in the movie 'The lion King', a happy mood is in the beginning, when the baboon is showing all the animals the new lion cub.

Tone is the author's attitude. The tone of a book or movie could be sad, but their could be a happy mood at the time. A tragic tone, in literature, would be any of the Edgar Allen Poe books, and a sad tone in a movie could be the Titanic.

8/26/10 Dream job

"If I could have any job in the world, I would ___ Because"

I would be either an animal control officer or a computer technician. I love to work with animals, and I dispise how some people treat animals sometimes. Some people beat the animals, starve them and otherwise mistreat them. I want to help those animals get justice, and I want to put the people who hurt them in jail.

I want to work with computers because I do well with them. I like to be on the computer all day anyway, so fixing them and programming them seems like an ideal job for me. I want to be a geek at best buy. It seems fun to me.

8/26/10 5 W's

" What are the 5 W questions? Why use them when reading?"

The five W's are Who, What, When, Where, And Why. Another of the words, an outsider, is How. I guess his W is silent? Maybe he's really Whow. Who knows? The reason for using them is to further  understand what you're reading. It also challenges you to to think further into a subject. For example, if you're reading a book on dogs, the question for "what" would be "What is the book about?" The answer would be "dogs."
It's not only books and reading that uses the W words and how. Movies can use them as well.
  • "What is the cause of this?"
  • "Who is affected by this?"
  • "Why did this person do this?"
  • "When was this done?"
  • "Why did this person cause that to happen?"
  • "How did this person cause that?"

8/25/10 A million reasons

"If I won 2.5 million dollars, I would..."

I have a huge list of things I would do and get. First and foremost, I would pay either for my boyfriend to visit me, or to visit my boyfriend. He lives all the way in New York during school, and in Florida during the summer. Neither of us have jobs, and neither of our families are willing or able to pay for our trips. I would then pay for all my family's bills and buy a new car for my mom and a motorcycle for me. Then, I would buy a new PS2, a Wii, a new laptop, a PSP, a PS3, and a DSiXL. I would also pay to get my pets all the medication they need to get rid of the fleas once and for all. I would pay for Vyncent to move in here in Missouri, and I would live in an apartment with him. There are many things I would do with 2.5 million dollars, so these are only a few.

8/24/10 Why work?

"What is the importance of working in your life?"

Working, for me, is an important part of life because without a job, where would you get money to live on? Sure you can get welfare and such from the state, foodstamps, WIC, and such like that, but I'd rather have the satisfaction of knowing that I did a good job and worked hard to earn my own money.
Getting and working at a job can also give you benefits, such as dental, health care and such like that. Most little jobs, like McDonald's, don't really have much in the form of such benefits, but if you work for a big company, such as Ameren UE, you can get them.Jobs pay you money on which to live on, as stated before, so you can buy food, a car, insurance for said car and other assets you have, a home, utilities, and luxuries. They give you oppertunities to provide for your family, and if you have no family, you can meet new friends there.

Work is something I look foreward to very much, especially if I get to work with computers.
